HALCYON REVAMPS SCENE ONCE MORE WITH SECOND COMPILATION, ‘ENCHANTED VOL.1’ – [LISTEN]
Today Halcyon unleashed its second, highly-awaited compilation. The release features a mix of familiar faces and newcomers to the cutting-edge music house. While ‘Halcyon Sound Vol.1’ introduced and defined the future riddim sound, the sophomore compilation experiments with evolving the style and expanding upon its distinctive qualities.
As implied by the ‘Enchanted’ title, the half-hour project propels listeners through a mesmerizing auditory journey that encompasses the hopeful, reflective and sometimes turbulent nature of the subgenre. Of the nine tracks, five are from Halcyon debutantes (listed in alphabetical order): Hukae, MAD DUBZ, MUERTE, sanjaux and qwaston. These artists have been growing their respective fan bases within the underground, but this compilation formally introduces the rising talents to a wider audience.
‘Enchanted Vol.1’ is an ambitious and complex homage to future riddim, hyperpop and other melodic bass music. The compilation’s quality can be attributed to its extensive catalog of distinct sounds, great songwriting and uncompromising attention to detail. Fans of the traditional riddim sound will enjoy the long-awaited arrival of Aweminus‘ “Sea Shanty.” Likewise, connoisseurs of hyerpop-infused dubstep will discover gems from qwaston and label leader, Oolacile.
Similar to ‘Halcyon Sound Vol.1,’ the latest release features punchy drums, ethereal synths and piercing bass. However, ‘Enchanted Vol.1’ places a greater emphasis on vocals and genre-fusing. The experimental approach employed by the artists blurs the boundaries between several forms of electronic music, resulting in some of the most innovative music today.
The trailblazing label continues to provide an independent environment for creatives, and a beacon of hope for bass music enthusiasts. Even though Halcyon is less than a year old, its forward-thinking influence on dubstep has changed the scene. Following a hectic end-of-year EP release schedule and fundraiser livestream in a short time span, the label shows no signs of letting up.
