EXRON MUSIC’S TOP EDM SUB-GENRES OF 2020 – [READ]
2020 has been a year unlike any other. Live music halted, shifted, and adapted to the situation and both musicians and fans have had to take a new approach to their music. TikTok skyrocketed in popularity and now influences what makes the top 40. Other social media platforms exposed people to new niches of electronic dance music and have caused new genres to arise in popularity. Here are Exron’s top 5 sub-genres of EDM for 2020 (In no particular order).
Tech House
Artists: Dom Dolla, Chris Lake, Walker & Royce
Over the past few years, the genre that mixes house with techno has seen a massive increase in popularity. With its robust synths and its strong kicks, tech house has been dominant in a global club scene before covid took storm. Even after, its sound has been able to continue to become even more popular with releases like Trust the Process by Dombresky and All on Me by Tchami and Zhu.
Techno
Artists: Jensen Interceptor, Adam Beyer, Carl Cox
Techno. A classic genre that lies deep in the hearts of many has had a bit of a slump in terms of popularity over the past five years, especially in the States. However, 2020 proved to be different as quarantining has made everyone antsy to find music that itches their clubbing urges. For many, Adam Beyer and Carl Cox recordings have been what gives hope for the future. Its signature four on the floor beat and spacey synths make it perfect for the 2021 year where everyone will eventually be able to join again for live music.
Dubstep
Artists: Excision, Subtronics, MUST DIE!
Everyone either completely hates or absolutely loves dubstep, and for good reason. It’s robotic, chopped-up sound is something so unique to any other style of music, that people are quickly split between the two. It seems this had more people loving it as the electronic sub-genre managed to become even more popular with the help of the hit song, “Griztronics” by Griz and Subtronics.
Melodic House
Artists: DJ Boring, Ross from Friends, DJ Poolboi
With such intense variations of EDM saturating the music pool, it is only logical that something from the other side of the spectrum would gain popularity. Melodic house music takes aspects of lo-fi and Detroit-style house to present a much more relaxed approach to the music. Breakout song, “Winona” from DJ Boring has acted as a catalyst to engage more people in this exciting new genre.
Future Bass
Artists: San Holo, Droeloe, Grant
Future Bass is not new to the scene by any means, but it has still managed to hold a strong presence in the bass community. While pioneers like RL Grime and Hudson Mohawke kickstarted the sound in the early 2010s with unique drum patterns and chopped-up vocal effects, the sound has been continued and accelerated by the likes of Droeloe and San Holo. This is a sound that we do not see fading out soon and are excited to see what comes next from it.
