To celebrate the end of an exhaustive yet inspiring year, we’ve created a list of the best Wakaan releases of 2020. Fan favorites like TVBOO, Mize, Mersiv, and Jantsen have all found their place in this list. And, of course, Liquid Stranger himself secured a spot as well. Check out our take on the sauciest Wakaan drops of the year, and see which artist wound up in the number one spot!

10. SULLY – DUCK HUMMUS

Sully’s “Duck Hummus” was the talk of the summer. This track exemplifies the young artist’s mastery of dark and wonky dubstep. Written while he was on the ASCENSION tour, “Duck Hummus” represents forward-thinking bass music concepts. Sully has really stepped into the spotlight this year, and there’s no doubt this track helped solidify his brand in the music scene.

9. DMVU – CHEMICALS

To round out the month of June, DMVU blessed us with this downright dirty single, “Chemicals,” the title track of his 7-track EP. It quickly became a fan favorite for its filthy drops and magnetic melodies and certainly set the tone for the remainder of the EP.

8. CHAMPAGNE DRIP X LUCII – ME AND YOU

“Me and You” marks Lucii’s first Wakaan release of 2020. An absolute trip, the song explores passionate melodies as well as deep, soul-stirring wubs. Lucii’s celestial vocals helped “Me and You” stand out as one of the label’s most unique offerings of the year.

7. RUSKO – SAUCE EP

Back in October, legendary U.K. dubstep maestro, Rusko made his long-awaited Wakaan debut. His four-track Sauce EP also represents the artist’s first and only release of the new decade. Each track demonstrates Rusko’s versatile production capabilities and offers an ample amount of his signature wonky and wobbly sounds. By enlisting artists like Dirt Monkey and Boogie T., Rusko knew exactly what he was doing.

6. TVBOO – SOMETHING 4 UR MIND

TVBOO has had a wildly successful year. After releasing a string of multiple hits, he introduced the title track to his EP, “Something 4 Ur Mind,” on Wakaan. The deep wubs and the tempo shift make this unpredictable track hard to get out of your head. Once live music returns, this will easily be one we chase.

5. G-REX – HITTA

Released just in time for Halloween, “HITTA” became the grimiest bass anthem of 2020. The track feature’s G-Rex’s signature rumbly sound design and a thick bassline. “HITTA” was the first track from the artist’s HALLOWS EP and certainly set the tone for the mayhem that was to come.

4. MIZE – THOUGHT PROCESS

Alabama-based DJ and producer Mize has been making headline after headline in 2020. As the title track from his debut EP, “Thought Process,” Mize builds a cosmic, bass-infused melody. “Thought Process” represents the budding artist’s ability to craft a multidimensional soundscape, taking listeners on a full journey in just under five minutes.

3. MERSIV X FRYAR – PARADISE EP

Listening to both tracks on Paradise by Mersiv and Fryar is like floating through another dimension. Its intricate sound design boasts divine energy and effortlessly heals any lucky listener that crosses its path. Deep, distorted basslines are woven into ethereal melodies as Mersiv and Fryar fuse talents to bring this track to life. Paradise is easily the best thing that happened to September.

2. LIQUID STRANGER – ASCENSION EP

The label boss himself delivered one of Wakaan’s most incredible offerings of 2020. A Valentine’s Day gift, Liquid Stranger’s Ascension EP is composed of six unique, mind-bending tracks. The EP even features frequenters of Wakaan, including LSDREAM, LUZCID, Hydraulix, and more.

1. JANTSEN X MERSIV – GET CRAZY

“Get Crazy” by Jantsen and Mersiv singlehandedly set the tone for the future of Wakaan. There was no debate as to which spot this song deserved on this list. As two of the heaviest hitters in bass music right now, Jantsen and Mersiv fully flexed their talents in this track. “Get Crazy” combines headbanging dubstep with bouncy basslines to deliver you the sauciest Wakaan release of 2020.

After a powerhouse year in 2020, we can’t wait to hear what’s to come from the Wakaan label in 2021!

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!
