NIGHT TIME INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION FIGHTS UK REGULATIONS TO SAVE NIGHT LIFE

The world continues to battle COVID as we enter 2021 and regulations have been hitting the nightlife industry particularly hard. In Britain, the nightlife community has been lobbying against government regulations for their restrictions that seem to target the hospitality, food and beverage, and nightlife venues unfairly more than others. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) claims the new government-issued policies entering into effect on December 2nd, 2020 could possibly result in a collapse of the nightlife industry altogether.

It is not only a matter of social distancing; curfews and other restrictive operational policies such as food service and live performances are seen as intentionally crippling to the nightlife scene. With increasingly conservative political views gaining real power in the UK, each round of mandates continues to systematically erase the dance community. British EDM artist Carl Cox laments over the systematic oppression he believes the nightlife is facing by the government; “They’re basically saying we don’t exist.”

NTIA joined campaigns such as #LetUsDance and #CancelTheCurfew in order to raise awareness of the nightlife industry’s exclusion from the support package distributed by the UK’s Department of Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports. CEO Matt Kill emphasizes the consequences on the economy should nightlife in Britain be forced to disappear; employing 8% of the population among roughly 1,640 nightclubs nationwide, UK’s $66 billion dollar nightlife is facing an industry apocalypse without government support. Kill acknowledges the breakdown in communication between NTIA and the government, stating “at the moment, we have been left out in the cold and are almost being squeezed out of the marketplace by the government.”

Outstanding talent has emerged from the UK nightlife scene, including international superstar Calvin Harris, godfather of big beat music Fatboy Slim, and Best Breakthrough Producer at the 2019 British Music Awards Denis Sulta, and have all called the UK night clubs home. Undoubtedly a great reservoir of undiscovered young talent, the nightlife in UK continues to gain support as they lobby against biased government mandates.
