TCHAMI DELIVERS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DEBUT ALBUM – [REVIEW]
This past Friday was HUGE for new music, but the central focus among all the fresh content was without doubt Tchami’s debut album. The French producer, also known as Martin Joseph Léonard Bresso, is considered to be a pioneer of the sub-genre ‘future house’ and has been dominating the scene since 2013. Tchami exploded so quickly into success that he’s been spending the last 6 to 7 years touring relentlessly across the globe to share his music to thousands of doting fans. With the COVID-19 quarantine in place, Tchami has finally had the time to return to the studio and release his debut collection of tracks under the album name ‘Year Zero’.
‘Year Zero’, presumably named for the reset that the global pandemic has caused the world to endure, includes 16 original singles each with their own flavor, altogether creating a varied, masterful and delectable compilation.
The album begins with “Heartless” feat. Chace, a soulful track with a hopeful melody, lyrics and a fantastically progressive house beat to round off the drop. Though a bit more relaxed for Tchami’s style, this single and much of the album show a softer side of the future house aficionado. “Proud” feat. Daecolm and “Ghosts” feat. Hana are also included, both songs that reached immediate success upon their early release in March of this year. These tracks are insanely catchy, both with fantastic vocals accompanying Tchami’s unmatched production skills.
“Toxic Love” feat. Suburban Plaza begins with a soft introduction leading into powerful lyrics and a flawless beat that builds and drops into the deeper realm of house. “Buenos Aires” was originally dropped back in May and is next in line, combining a breakbeat, repeating vocals chanting “I don’t care what the people say”, a quicker BPM and a more energized feel. “Praise” feat. Gunna follows, combining the rapper’s drippy voice and lyrics with an absolute fire deep house lead. Tchami dropped this track only a week before the album arrived, which built an immense amount of excitement for fans across the board.
Tchami continues with “Shine On”, a groovy piece that delights with its simplicity and funky melody. This song evokes only the best emotions, emitting a genuinely happy and euphoric aura. Next is “All On Me” feat. Zhu, a collaboration sent from the Gods. Zhu’s haunting vocals seamlessly mix into the mysterious bassline that slowly builds and erupts into a deep-future masterpiece. Zhu has had a huge year himself, with showstopping single releases and high-profile collaborations, this one just adding to the collection. “The Light” gives off major disco vibes with a fun and boogie-worthy vocal sample matched with a bright organ-sounding melody.
“Sweet Savage” begins with a beautiful piano riff, then brings in ethereal vocals. The drop is just splendid, combining bass and percussion into a bouncy sensation. “Monseigneur” feat. Tony Romero starts out strong, with a biting bassline and taunting bell-based melody, with deep vocals then setting the stage for an immaculately disruptive tech-house drop. “Rebirth” feat. Stacy Barthe is deep and pleasant, Barthe’s vocals incredibly vibey and complementary to the dance-worthy deep house mixing.
The French producer brings out the big guns next for “Born Again”, a single originally released this past May and super reminiscent of Tchami’s older releases. This piece is an unabated future house bop, the drop fulfilling every shuffler’s dreams. “Ain’t That Kind Of Friend” features vocals that could very well bring you to tears and the most aesthetically pleasing overall feel. The album wraps up with “Damaged Hearts” feat. Todd Edwards, a single that so skillfully embodies the 80’s with that classic swinging drum kit paired with hopeful lyrics.
Overall ‘Year Zero’ has shown a new and delightfully creative side of one of house’s favorite superstars. Tchami has that much sought after natural talent for acoustic perfection and he did not disappoint with his debut LP. The producer’s fans are elated with the album thus far, and once the pandemic allows, fans will sure be traveling far and wide to see a ‘Year Zero’ tour.
