EXRON EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: SLOW MAGIC
Masked DJ and producer Slow Magic has had an exciting past couple of months, leading up to the release of his Closer 2 U EP today on Moving Castle. His recent singles “Somewhere” with Shallou featuring Woven in Hiatus and “Closer 2 U” with Manila Killa have set the stage for this enchanting collection of substance.
With a soundscape composed of delicate melodies and breathtaking synth work, we had to learn more about this mysterious artist. Slow Magic dives into details about the future of his project and his own personal quarantine. And as someone whose message and brand are overwhelmingly positive, he offers some words of encouragement to fans who are feeling stuck due to the pandemic. Check out our exclusive interview with the human behind the mask:
Exron Music: How does having anonymity behind the mask benefit your project? Does it create any obstacles?
Slow Magic: Being anonymous is definitely an interesting journey! It has benefited me by letting me separate my face from the music and allow people to really just focus on the music itself. There are definite obstacles though, mainly the logistics of staying hidden in a venue (or hiding in plain sight) and having to be the weird one in group photos that has to cover their face.
Exron Music: Performing behind a mask is something that’s always been unique to your brand. What advice can you give others who are adjusting to wearing masks pretty much all the time now?
Slow Magic: Oh definitely. I think if I can wear a mask on a hot stage and jump around for an hour you should be encouraged to wear a mask in the store for a little bit. But in all seriousness, I know that wearing a mask is not always fun be we have to look out for each other and think of each other. ♡
Exron Music: How has quarantine affected your creative process? Has it inspired your music in any unexpected ways?
Slow Magic: I have to say I have not been inspired by the quarantine is any way at all. I’m jealous of people that act like this is “the best thing that ever happened to me wow I’m so productive I made 5 albums” for me, it’s just been hard to focus at times when everything in the world is falling apart. I do appreciate that it has helped me see what’s truly important in life more clearly.
Exron Music: You’ve toured with many different artists around the globe. Which past tour was your favorite? Can you pinpoint a top venue or city you’re looking forward to playing one day again?
Slow Magic: The first thing I thought of was my tour with Gold Panda across the USA a while back. He was a huge inspiration to me when I started Slow Magic and to get to share the stage with him years after starting was a real full circle moment for me. I love playing in Europe and Asia and really so many places but my top two would be Japan and Iceland.
Exron Music: Your music and message have brought a lot of positivity to the EDM community through the years. How do you plan to keep that momentum going?
Slow Magic: I’m glad to hear that ♡ I think that now more than ever, people need happy songs and an escape from normal life. I’ve just never been into downer songs or dark this and dark that just for the sake of being dark. So I guess my contribution will be to keep making bright things.
Exron Music: Together with Dream Angel, your Playdate podcast discovers song submissions from total strangers. How did you come up with this idea? And in what ways has it grown since the first episode aired in February?
Slow Magic: The initial idea was Dream Angel’s and we had always wanted to do a Podcast together. We are learning and growing as we make the podcast, as it is a totally new experience for both of us. I think you may want to keep an eye on the show because we have some fun things planned for the rest of this year.
Exron Music: Although you’ve been able to connect with fans virtually, it’s not the same as a live performance. Do you have any exciting ideas for Slow Magic shows after quarantine?
Slow Magic: I really can’t wait to get back out to play shows in the future! (Wear a mask plz) I have a lot of ideas and things in store for when we get back to live concerts. I think that so many things will be completely changed and I want to adapt to the new ways of live music when the time comes.
