It comes as no surprise that Adventure Club has been dominating the electronic scene since 2012, with a stacked portfolio of chart-topping tunes, consistent touring and highly dedicated fandom. But there’s something else that sets Adventure Club apart from the wide array of DJ/Producers that flock to the dance industry; an individualism and creativity that together produces a priceless spark of energy that can only be described as endearing to all those involved. With the release of their most recent single “Rebellious” with long-time collaborator Yuna, their newest Superheroes Anonymous Mix and excitement arising with the talk of their newest album drop, Adventure Club has already begun to slay this new decade. Find out what AC members Christian Srigley and Leighton James had to say about their past and future in our Exclusive Interview below:
Exron Music: We have been following Adventure Club since the beginning, garnering interest in your duo with the release of your breakout single “Do I See Color”. When originally forming the group, what were some of your biggest goals as artists and do you feel like you’ve reached what your younger selves hoped to accomplish?
Thank you so much, it means a lot. We can still remember releasing “Do I see colour” from Christian’s parents house basement. Honestly, at the beginning (and for the majority of our career) it hasn’t been so much about goal setting (while we do believe its important in life) but it has been more about doing what we love and sharing that with our fans. We originally just wanted to re-imagine songs from artists we love like Thrice, Brand New. We grew up always playing in bands, so it was our way to kind of pay homage. Our musical style kind of just evolved into melodic dubstep after that. Once we kind of knew that music was where our lives we’re headed we created some “milestones” we wanted to hit and I can say we’ve hit all of them.
Exron Music: Dubstep as a genre has seen quite a metamorphosis over the past decade. As some of the forefathers, what is your opinion on the transformation that has occurred, and where do you think dubstep will go from here?
Tell me about it. Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess. There are so many young producers out there releasing mind-blowing / genre-blending records. I do see a return to 2012 esque sound for a short while, I feel like a lot of producers will want a hit of nostalgia in 2020 (Including ourselves).
Exron Music: Your music has topped charts, amassed millions of streams, and even brought you to a Grammy Nomination, but the positive feedback has not hindered your ability to move forward in producing new music. What would you say is the key to staying grounded in your art?
It’s something we never really expected. I think it’s important to always do it for yourselves. We release music because we want to and it’s what we want to hear and also to some extent what we think fans will like. I think getting too caught up in streams, accolades, and chart-topping can have a negative effect. You’re always chasing instead of creating.
Exron Music: Adventure Club is the first group that brought me into truly loving electronic music, and I personally credit my career in the industry to how influential your Dubstep was to me. How does it feel to have such a dedicated fanbase that has not only stayed true but also grown and flourished with you as artists?
Again, that means so much to us, and we’re truly happy to hear it and love that you fell in love with the scene and found passion in working within it. It’s honestly one of the things that keeps us going, it’s grown into such a loving family and it’s so nice to always have a supportive and interactive family. Shout out Adventure Club Club!
Exron Music: Your mixtape series, ’Superheroes Anonymous’ is very popular among the electronic community, averaging a million listeners throughout the span of the series. What is your favorite part of sharing these mixes with your audience?
Superheroes Anonymous has always been something special for us to create/share. I think it’s about sharing a mood and giving insight into what we’re into or what we’re listening to at a given moment. It’s a chance for us to showcase the new music that we love. Give people a journey, a companion, a workout partner. It gives us the ability to connect via music that isn’t necessarily ours.
Exron Music: Your ‘Death Or Glory Tour’ lasted three months, hitting countless music hubs along the way. After touring steadily over the past decade, what advice do you have for newer artists that have not yet become acquainted to the experience?
I think it’s one of those things that, everyone is going to go through it and has to experience it their own way. There’s advice we can give like, keep a level head and don’t get too caught up in the partying aspect, some things that we would’ve done differently. But everyone’s tour life is different and I think it’s so personal and unique to each act that it’s tough to give advice.
Exron Music: We were very excited for your newest single release this past Friday, “Rebellious” feat. Yuna. The collaboration brought about a ton of nostalgia from your 2013 hit “Gold” with the talented vocalist as well. What is it about Yuna’s sound that works so well with the Adventure Club vibe, and what brought you all back together for this new track?
Ahh, we were the most excited to release it lol. Ever since we remixed ‘Lullabies’ by Yuna, we’ve always been pulled towards Yuna’s voice. We can’t put into words how much we love working with Yuna. Everything about her is perfect. Her voice, tone, delivery, the emotion that goes into every word. It’s just a synergy that’s indescribable, it works and we’re happy just knowing that it works.
Exron Music: “Rebellious” comes in anticipation of your new album, (which we are so excited for btw), set to drop later this year. What sets this album a part from your previous compilations?
I think this album encompasses everything we’ve grown to love in the scene. We know what we like (musically) and what we don’t and we’re not scared to release anything. Before it was kinda like “our fans gonna like this?” and it was kind of us finding ourselves experimenting with music. But this album has a lot of 2012 roots baked into it, a lot of melodic dubstep, but we’re also not timid about our love for pop.
Exron Music: I personally find the most impressive quality in a musician to be the ability to adapt to the current times while still staying dedicated to their vision and purpose – obviously something that Adventure Club has mastered. What pushes you to keep moving forward with the project?
Fans and our undying love for music.
Exron Music: So many have found solace through music during the COVID-19 crisis. In your opinion, what is it about music that has such a healing effect on the masses?
That’s honestly the beauty of music. It’s unconditionally there for you.
It’s a deep-rooted relationship that you have with either songs and/or artists.
