Elrow Takes Over Art Basel

Art Basel, an international tour of contemporary art, made its American pitstop in South Beach, Miami for the first week of December, beginning on the 3rd and ending on the 8th. Although the Miami Beach Convention Center housed the formal event, the entire city celebrated via Basel-inspired pop up galleries, live music, and immersive art experiences. For all of Basel week, Miami’s local artists and DJs paraded through the streets, invigorated by the passion of their stomping grounds. However, the touring art show and city spectacle also caught the eye of global presences.

Elrow

On December 6th at Islands Gardens, Elrow, a Spain-based non-DJ-centric art show and rave, copied Art Basel by also making an American pit stop. Elrow’s lineup consisted of creative conductors Okuda San Miguel and Paco Osuna, with more beats provided by Blond:ish, a Canadian house artist, and De La Swing, a resident DJ at Elrow and Monegros Desert Festival.

Elrow created a world at Islands Gardens. Just beyond the entrance to the event was an atrium, from which hung multi-colored drapes of rainbows and trippy designs. Inflatable rafts and confetti clouded the air as gargantuan foam animals floated above ravers, like halted pendulums. Performers dressed as dragons and curious critters waltzed through the crowd, some of them pausing to interact with ravers. One particular performer, dressed as a caterpillar in what looked like a “James and the Giant Peach” meets “Alice and Wonderland” inspired costume, frequently caught the attention of attendees as he pantomimed smoking a cigarette with one of his many arms.

For the finale of the show, Blond:ish, rocking her signature half-up half-down bun hairstyle, energetically bounced to the beat while tending to the board. Blond:ish, formally known as Vivie-Ann Bakos, did what all great DJs do intuitively – she worked the crowd. In the true style of house, her beats melded together, never ending and never beginning in what eventually became a conscious-altering hypnotism. Oscillating between tribal techno and deep house, she kept the momentum of Elrow and its world zooming and the suspense of belief nothing short of magical.

Heralding from sunny South Florida, I am a proud Florida Woman. In my free time, I surf the swamp, wrangle gators, open fan mail, and tend to my pets. In the wild, I'm most often spotted at immersive art spaces, step tappin' in a shadowed corner of the club, hater blockerz on, totally incognito as your resident EDM spice girl. Although I generally tout my spicy side, if there's one thing I'd love to impress upon the world, it would be this: it's not a waste to give love to those who do not deserve it – it's a gift. The world would be a better place if we gave, in kindness and in mercy, to those who need it most with no expectation in return.

What's your reaction?
