Crystal Skies Drops EP “Constellations” – Listen Now
Ophelia Records, piloted by Seven Lions and company, recently released a five-track EP by the up and coming group Crystal Skies. Crystal Skies, a duo formally known as Britain Holcomb and Aaron Dawson, have most notably achieved acclaim for their Seven Lions’ collaboration “Sojourn” and rock a sound similar to the melodic dub of Mr. Lions’ himself. This newly dropped EP, titled “Constellations,” features artists such as Gallie Fisher, Satellite Empire, and crowd favorite RUNN.
As melodic dubstep, “Constellations” follows a template that, in addition to speaker-shaking drops, features poignant lyrics and a soaring melody. The two standouts of the EP, “One More Night” and “Feels Right (feat. RUNN),” come across as dubstep ballads with airy refrains, catchy hooks, and the occasional heavy wub. However “Feels Right (feat. RUNN)” is particularly noteworthy, with staccato drum beats that thunder similar to the stomps of a large animal on the run, perhaps one even keeping time to the music. On the percussion’s downbeat, or the interim between thunders, the melody of the track breathes. In theory, the disjointed drum thuds should clash with the dreamy musicality of the track, but it could not be more the opposite – the drops inflame the melody and become its beating heart.
