Exron Exclusive Interview: NERVO

We recently got the chance to catch up with the brilliant ladies of NERVO!  In our exclusive interview we discussed everything including their new track ‘Worlds Collide’, motherhood and their success in the music industry.  In the past year the duo has become brand ambassadors for Volleyball Nations League (VNL), toured across the globe, and become new mothers together!  They recently received the Miami Music Week IDMA award for “Best Female Artist”. Mim and Liv continue to prove that they are unstoppable force in the music world.  Check out the full interview below for more details:

Exron Music: Tell us a little bit about how you two started the “Nervo” project and how your success has shaped your lives.

NERVO: How early do you want to go back ? Us jamming out to Michael Jackson as kids, when we wrote our first tune at around 14 years old l, or the first festival we went to? Music was always central to our being. We loved it, played piano and sang from a vey early age. We wrote our first song when we were around fourteen years old. Our first major festival (that we attended) was The Big Day Out, we saw The Prodigy. That was a life changing experience. We were super inspired by the sounds, the scene, everything really. We moved to the UK the week we turned 19 years old and have been hustling ever since. We started out as songwriters (and waitresses), ended up having a few songs with other artists and DJs, pinned a grammy for a tune we wrote for David Guetta and finally learned to DJ (mainly at house parties). Our summer trips to Ibiza were also a massive influence in our musical lives/direction/tastes. We became tired of crafting pop tunes and craved crunchier, dirtier beats, longer grooves.  We have made a lot of really bad songs but some good ones too. These days we’ve come full circle and are making mainly dance/pop music.

Exron Music: What was the inspiration behind your new track “Worlds Collide”.  Are you excited for the release of the track?

NERVO: We’ve had a great year getting to know VNL (Volleyball Nations League) and were honored when they asked us to be brand ambassadors and to write their theme song. We’re always a little nervous before a release but also super excited. We spent many years making music that never got heard so it’s great to actually have releases that hopefully connect with people.

Exron Music: Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process when working on new tracks/collaborations?

NERVO: It changes all the time, depends what we are working on. Normally we start with a chord progression or a riff idea and then a melody/lyric comes straight after that. We tend to always lead with melody. We love to mix up different styles so we try not to think about which label to release through or what artist it fits until we have finished the idea. Some of our most successful songs have come from our craziest ideas so we try and keep an open mind – especially with sonics.

Exron Music: The NERVOnation Summer Tour kicked off earlier this month, what do you look forward to most when touring around the world?

NERVO: Of course the shows are a major highlight. The different cultures, foods, countries etc. Learning quirky random things about different places we visit is so great. Being able to travel with your sister and now babies makes it extra special too. Every day is a blessing !

Exron Music: How has becoming new mothers together influenced your music careers?

NERVO: Motherhood has taught us to prioritize better. I think we have actually become more productive. Who knew! Being a mother is truly one of the most rewarding “jobs”. Our little girls bring so much joy to our lives. Their noises, their little faces, the way they cuddle, the way they learn something new each day. It really is a beautiful thing. As far as the future goes we are just going to keep on keeping on. We are still making music and touring and plan to continue doing so. The pace is a little slower – we might not accept a double up show – but all-in-all, our lives just feel more enriched.

Exron Music: We love your style! What kind of message/vibe are you looking to send fans with your music and unique style?

NERVO: Although we are quite similar, we also have our differences in style. Mim is probably a little more bold with her fashion choices and Liv can be a littler more boho, at least at weddings she is. We love finding cool pieces from around the world to wear and we find a lot of these pieces in Asia.  At shows we love leggings with platform tennis shoes or creepers (shoes must be comfortable!) and a body suit or a crop top. We jump around a lot so our clothes need to be something that do not restrict our movement.  In everyday life we also really like to be comfortable so we love comfy tees with a cool jacket of some kind and definitely no make up. We like to let our skin breathe whenever possible. We have also done some amazing collabs with brands so we often rep those pieces. We love to work with brands as it pushes us to be more creative. We have a sunglasses range which we will be launching in the summer and a clothing label called Grand Royal. Getting ready for red carpet events is also a lot of fun – every girl likes to be a fairy princess for a night!

Exron Music: Do you have any advice for aspiring female producers?

NERVO: Work on your music. Don’t expect an easy ride because this business is tough BUT when things DO click it is super rewarding so keep at it. There are so many perks that we never expected, like the travel, the days off in random places like Croatia or Punta Del Este or Cambodia, the different friends we make from all around the world, the different foods we get to sample, the cultures we get to see/experience. All of this comes if you spend enough time and put energy into the music !

Exron Music: What are your goals for NERVO for the rest of the year?

We have quite a few upcoming releases that we were working very hard on so right now all our energy is going into that. We have our residencies and we’re loving throwing our NERVOnation parties around the world which will definitely carry over into next year along with a whole lot of festivals which we’re super stoked about. On a personal level, we have toured some amazing places around the world and are still visiting places we have never been before.  The gigs are great!  We have new families now so that all is part of our life now.  Of course it would be nice to win a grammy, have ten number 1’s but all in all we’re having a great time and feel very lucky to do music for a living and continue that run into 2019 and beyond!

Mim and Liv have been such a positive female influence in the electronic music world scene and we only expect great things for the future of NERVO.
