Porter Robinson’s New Sound Pays Off With “Ghost Voices” Getting Grammy Nomination For Best Dance Recording

Porter Robinson’s side project Virtual Self has earned him a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 61st annual Grammy Music awards. Virtual Self emerged due to Porter’s desire to go in a new direction and make music true to his soul.

In an interview with Billboard magazine Porter revealed his feelings and motivations behind Virtual Self. “When I see people asking me to play Porter Robinson songs at a Virtual Self show … I hate it. People want to hear the songs they know and love, but for me it just feels so wrong … I’ve clearly thought about this so much more than you. I’ve obsessed over this for three years. Yeah, it occurred to me. ‘What if I played Porter songs?’ and my answer was a resounding ‘no.’”

Going in a new artistic direction can be hard, especially when you have a well-established sound that people love and expect at shows. Porter knew deep down that he wanted to make something new, so he took a risk. This Grammy nomination is proof that you must make art that comes from the purest point of your heart and soul. Believe in yourself, and in your personal sound and watch how far it can take you.
