Exron Exclusive: CRAY
During Electric Zoo Festival earlier this month, we had the opportunity to chat with Cray, an up and coming producer/ DJ that is already killing the music game. We’ve been following this artist for some time and have already seen an evolution in her musical skill and style. With only up to go from here, it’s clear that the sky is the limit for Cray music. Check out our Exron Exclusive interview about new tracks, touring and the future of Cray music below:
Exron Music: The first time we heard your music was for your EARMILK Guest Mix. We were instantly impressed and hooked on your musical presence. Ever since then you’ve been killing it at shows and festivals across the country. How are you feeling about all the positive feedback you’ve been getting from fans?
CRAY: It’s awesome! To get positive feedback keeps you going. The fact that it gets better over time builds me up to make me want to keep going. It’s tough and tiring to be touring all the time, it’s lonely and hard but to get good feedback helps me know I’m doing something right and it’s worth it in the end.
Exron Music: Your style is so upbeat and high energy, it’s hard not to dance while you’re playing. What is it about your current style that reflects you as an artist?
CRAY: I don’t like standing still ever, I’m always moving. But I feel that music is just a super fun profession, it’s so bright and keeps me going. Lately i’ve been making happy, pop-y music which just shows that I’m always trying to bring a high energy to my set, I’m working on finding a balance. I like so many genres, I hate just playing one. My sets can be all over the place but that’s just because I love so many different types of music and I want to play them all.

Exron Music: As two women trying to make a name for ourselves in a heavily male dominated industry we love seeing another woman excelling and slaying like you are. What advice can you give women who want to pursue a career in music?
CRAY: Keep going. Sometimes it’ll get discouraging but you have to just keep going. One day you’ll get to the point where you don’t care anymore, you’ll just be killing it and people will have to respect you. Also make other girlfriends in the industry and build each other up.
Exron Music: We love the relationship you have with Brownies & Lemonade. How did this relationship start and what can you say about their purpose on your musical journey?
CRAY: They’ve always supported me from day one. From the beginning I would go to all their parties; I wasn’t playing I would just go and support them and one day they were just like ‘Are you ready to start?’. They’re great for putting on underground talent and for curating amazing lineups. They’re so talented and have made such big moves even in the last year.
Exron Music: We are big fans of this new duo ‘Crayzo’ that has been popping up here and there. Are there any plans in the works for some official ‘Crayzo’ collabs?
CRAY: Yeah definitely! I think it’ll happen more naturally. We don’t want it to be something forced, we want it to be different. Instead of our individual styles being put together, we want it to be something new. We already do the bass music, we already do the pop, so what can we do that’s different? Our back-to-backs are always so fun because all we do is troll each other.
Exron Music: We were esctatic when you released your track ‘Peaches’. Can you tell us about the production of this track and your inspiration?
CRAY: I wanted to start singing and writing. I always loved writing in school and I thought why don’t I just start writing my own lyrics? I’m not a great singer, but I’m authentic, I don’t edit my vocals. The track is more about how the industry discredits you and makes you think that there’s always a guy who helped you out, or something else happened in order for you to become famous and I was sick of that. It’s one of those songs that I wanted to be powerful, especially for women. I wanted it to be something they could relate to. Not just another “partying” song. It actually means something.
Exron Music: How was your summer tour? And can we expect some fall tour dates as well?
CRAY: Summer was crazy! It was the most i’ve ever toured so it was a bit of an adjustment emotionally, cause I’m very much a homebody. I have my cat, I like producing at home, I have my little studio, so being on the road so much was definitely something to get used to. Especially with Hayden, (Kayzo), he’s done this so much he’s like a machine. He really taught me how to focus on the things you love and to make sure to have rituals. I really got into a good groove eventually. Fall is going to be the same, shows every few weekends.
Exron Music: In addition to your music we love your sense of style. How do you show people who you are as a person through your style choices?
CRAY: I wear a lot of horror vintage shirts, I love old horror movies. My style really ranges from literally sweatpants to vintage T-shirts to these crazy skirts. Sparkles! It’s just like music, I like so many different kinds of music and it’s the same with fashion. I like incorporating it all. For sets I like being cozy so I can move around. I like to wear overalls so no one can see my butt on stage….if I wear a skirt it’s game over. I like color but also black, it always depends. I like doing things that are unique. Like with my hair being half brunette half blonde… it’s now becoming a thing and it was actually an accidental trend. I lost a bet and had to dye half my hair green and now it stuck.
Exron Music: We are so excited for the future of Cray! Are there any impending plans for music that you can share with us?
CRAY: I have a new single coming out in October! I’m writing more and I want it to be a little bit more chill. I definitely still want dance to be apart of it but I really want to focus on writing. I’m making the music video for it this week. It’s low budget but we’re doing it, and I’m really excited to share it. One day I want to be live and sing on stage too. It’s intense to try to find a balance but my fans are so forgiving and supportive and I’m so lucky to have that.
Exron Music: Thank you so much and best of luck to you!
