The Weeknd’s “My Dear Melancholy” Quickly Tops Charts

Last week the infamous artist The Weeknd put out a six track EP titled “My Dear Melancholy”.  The tracks are true to his style of sensual beats with thought-provoking lyrics.  Although some people were disappointed by the short track list on the EP, most everybody could agree that old school the Weeknd was back to put you in your feels. All of the tracks have already gained millions of plays on Spotify and “Call Out My Name” bumped off Drake’s “God’s Plan” after weeks of being number 1.

There is huge speculation about whether the album was written because of his break up with Selena Gomez.  Regardless, we are so thankful for the six tracks on the EP; we had been patiently waiting for the Weeknd to get back to his roots. Abel Tesfaye was originally discovered by fellow Canadian, Drake, who asked him to collaborate with him on his second album. Abel finally gained some recognition and momentum around that time when he released his first mixtape, “House of Balloons” in 2011.  From there he was unstoppable and put out full albums almost every year after that. In 2016, Abel was starting to move into a pop direction with his style especially with his album, “Starboy”. The tracks still gained huge support but some of his original fans were skeptical of the style he was moving in.  With the release of “My Dear Melancholy” The Weeknd proves he will be a talented, versatile force to be reckoned with across multiple genres of music.
