Porter Robinson’s Premiere as Virtual Self in Brooklyn

Porter Robinson continues to prove himself as one of, if not the most skilled producers in electronic music. His constant need for ingenuity is effortlessly refreshing, and his fearless revisions to himself as a musician are seriously pivotal to the electronic music scene as a whole.

Last night Porter debuted his new alias, Virtual Self, to a sold out warehouse in the middle of nowhere Brooklyn. The underground New York scene that thrived in the 90’s seemed to resurrect last night for Virtual Self to take his first flight. Since his “Worlds” album released in 2014, Porter has had this new project in the works. This might be the realest creation of his music yet, constructed entirely from Porter’s inner most thoughts and inspirations. Only Porter Robinson would be able to shake an entire industry, not once but now twice by introducing a complete new sound. Porter changed the game with his creation of ‘Worlds’, and now with his introduction of what he calls “NeoTrance”, his skill set as an artist seems to be unending and unremitting.

There was no glimpse of ‘Worlds’ Porter at the premiere of Virtual Self, and it is clear to see that this project will have no relation to his past music whatsoever. Rather, Hardstyle Techno and expertly created “NeoTrance”, matched with some of the best lighting design we have witnessed to date, created what we now know to be Virtual Self. Trance is one of the most difficult genres of music to create, and if you are able to produce it, there are no limits to your abilities. It is uncommon for a producer to be able to change genres three times while maintaining excellence and achieving musical perfection each time upon doing so.

Regardless of one’s taste in music, Porter Robinson is a force to be reckoned with. As an artist that will not produce music that isn’t true to his own being, or that doesn’t live up to his phenomenal standard, there is no one else like him in the world.

Porter has released that he will be presenting Virtual Self again at Buku Music + Arts Festival in New Orleans this March, and we highly suggest your attendance. One thing is for certain, Porter Robinson will be selective about his presentation of this new alias, so don’t miss out on an opportunity to see Virtual Self! Take a listen below to the full Virtual Self EP!
